Henryk Tomaszewski (poster artist)

Henryk Tomaszewski ( born June 10, 1914 in Warsaw, † September 11, 2005 ) was a Polish poster artist.

Life

He began his professional training in 1929 in the School of Graphic Arts Industry in Warsaw, where he learned the profession of artist - lithographer. Then he studied painting from 1934 to 1939 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. From 1936 to 1939 he delivered satirical drawings for the weekly paper " Szpilki " ( " pins "). In 1939 he was awarded the 1st prize for a design for the Polish Pavilion at the New York World's Fair.

After the war he received in Łodź a standing order (together with the graphic artist Eryk Lipiński ) for movie posters for the "Film Polski " distribution company. His movie posters represented a radical change in aesthetics dar. Instead of conventional photomontages showed Tomaszewski expressive, almost brutal drawings with striking typography. Soon afterwards came the Polish school of poster art, destined for decades, the high level of this art in Poland.

Tomaszewski was honored in 1948 with five first prizes at the International Poster Exhibition in Vienna.

Tomaszewski was appointed professor in 1966, 1959-1966 and 1972 to 1974 he was Dean of the Faculty of Graphic Arts in Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts.

He was also involved in book design and stage design. In the period from 1956 to 1962 his drawing feature articles in the weekly paper " Przegląd Kulturalny " ( " Culture Rundschau " ) published.

His works are exhibited in the art collections of museums.
