Heptachlor is an insecticide that acts as a contact or stomach poison. It has been used primarily against soil insects and termites, but also against Anopheles mosquitoes spread malaria and as a pesticide.
Heptachlor humans leads to liver damage and to an over- stimulation of the central nervous system. It is suspected of causing cancer. The half-life in the soil amounts to up to two years.

The chemical- analytical detection in environmental samples, food and feed can be performed with chromatographic methods.
Ban
In the Stockholm Convention of 22 May 2001 for a worldwide ban on the manufacture, sale and use of twelve persistent organic pollutants (POP persistent organic pollutants) was ratified. Under this " dirty dozen " is also heptachlor. Since 17 May 2004, the Convention has after ratification by the 50th State on the accession global validity.
