Heraclea Sintica

Heraclea Sintike (Latin Heraclea Sintica ) was an ancient city in East Macedonia Thrace, south of the Strymon. Heraclea could previously only be located approximately on the basis of coin finds and written sources. The city was located near the present town Zervokhori, perhaps even with Neo Petritsi. It was probably founded by King Philip II Macedon in the 4th century BC. After the Roman conquest, the city was part of the Roman province of Macedonia. Mention is made of the city at Caesar, Livy, Diodorus and last in Scripture Synékdemos, a list of provinces and cities under Justinian I briefly renewed Roman Empire, which shows that the city was still inhabited in the 6th century.
