Heraklonas

Heraklonas (* 626 in Lasika; † 641 on Rhodes ) was in 641 for a few months emperor of the Byzantine Empire.

Heraklonas ( Heraclius II, also Heraklenos or Herakleonas (Greek Ἡρακλεωνάς ), Latin Heraclianus; actually Konstantinos Heraclius Κωνσταντίνος Ἡράκλειος, Latin Constantinus Heraclius ) was a son of the Emperor Heraclius and Martina. This did everything that Heraklonas sole heir to the throne and his older half-brother Constantine III. should be excluded from the succession; so she brought her husband to during his lifetime Heraklonas 632 to Caesar, and on June 4, 638 (the son was just twelve years old ) to appoint as co-emperor. When Heraclius then died on 11 February 641, the widow Martina the de facto regent was, had the rule but first with Constantine III. share. This appears to have been ill for some time, at least he died on 25 May and the people became suspicious that Martina had helped along in this death. Before his death, Constantine III had. yet his eleven year old son Flavio Heraclius Caesar determined as the heir, in the summer as Constans II (actually Konstantin ) was crowned co-emperor. Apparently, even the regent Martina suspicious of Constantine III had. the Heermeister Valentinos instructed to protect his son. Apparently there was a power struggle between two Hofparteien. Then came probably on 14 September 641, the " people" who wanted to end the reign of the Empress Dowager final ( probably infected influential senators behind the revolt ), in the Imperial Palace, a mutilated Martina and Heraklonas ( it was his tongue cut out, his nose ) and both banished to Rhodes. Heraklonas died shortly afterwards of his injuries (see the report in Theophanes, AM 6133 ). Since his younger brothers and co-emperor Tiberius and David Martinos were eliminated, Constans II was unchallenged to take over the empire. The months of inner turmoil had the kingdom, however, further weakened and certainly contributed to the fact that the advance of the Arabs was not stopped in Egypt.
