Herb Cohen

Herb Cohen ( born 1933 in New York; † March 16, 2010 in Napa, California ) was an artist manager and businessman.

Life

Cohen managed by the mid- 1950s until the 1970s, many musicians, particularly in the metropolitan area of Los Angeles, including Pete Seeger, Screamin 'Jay Hawkins, Alice Cooper, George Duke, Tim Buckley, Lenny Bruce, Tom Waits and Linda Ronstadt. He also operated several concert clubs, including The Unicorn in Los Angeles.

Best known is his work as a manager of Frank Zappa and his band The Mothers of Invention, which he gave first performances and her first recording contract in 1965. With Zappa, he founded the record label, Bizarre Records, Straight Records and Discreet Records. In 1976, he and Zappa broke up after ten years of collaboration.
