Herb Ritts

Herb Ritts (* August 13 1952 in Los Angeles, California, † December 26, 2002 ) was an American photographer. He worked mainly in the field of fashion photography. The majority of his works were classic black and white photographs. One of his best known works is the image of Fred with Tires (English: Fred with Tires).

Career

Ritts taught himself with the majority of his skills and even expanded his knowledge in different courses. His first acclaimed work was a picture of the actor Richard Gere. Gere was a friend of Ritts and was photographed by him at a rest stop at a gas station. More pictures of him soon graced the covers of various magazines.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Ritts worked for magazines such as Harper 's Bazaar, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair and Vogue.

In addition to his fashion spreads itself Ritts made ​​mainly by its repeatedly unusual portraits of personalities such as Kofi Annan, Cindy Crawford, the Dalai Lama, Madonna, Sir Elton John, Jack Nicholson and Elizabeth Taylor a name.

With Madonna joined Ritts for many years a very active cooperation. He was initially responsible for the cover of Madonna's album True Blue. For Madonna's single Cherish Ritts shot his first music video. There were other artists such as Michael Jackson ( In the Closet ), Chris Isaak ( Wicked Game ) or Janet Jackson ( Love will never do without you ).

1996 showed the Museum of Fine Arts ( MFA) in Boston over 230 works by Ritts for the first time in a museum exhibition, which was attended by more than a quarter million people. In 2007, the Boston MFA from the Herb Ritts Foundation, a donation of 2.5 million U.S. dollars and 189 photographs from the estate of Ritts. Thus, the museum set up a permanent exhibition named after him, the Herb Ritts Gallery for Photography. The gallery is one of 53 in the new wing opened in 2010, the Foster Partners has designed.

Ritts came out as gay and as HIV -positive. He died on December 26, 2002 in Los Angeles at the consequences of the infection. Herb Ritts ' final works were a series of photos with Justin Timberlake as well as a series of images of actor Ben Affleck for the U.S. magazine Vanity Fair.
