Herbert Deutsch

Herbert A. German ( German Herb, born February 9, 1932 in Baldwin / New York) is an American composer.

German earned a bachelor degree from Hofstra University ( 1956), where he worked as a professor since the early 1960s until his retirement in 2001, and a second bachelor's and a master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music. He studied composition with Albert Tepper and Elie victory champion.

1963-64 he developed with Robert Moog the first Moog synthesizer. In 1965 he gave his New York Improvisation Quartet the first public concert on a Moog synthesizer in New York's Town Hall in 1969 as part of the jazz program at the Garden the first concert with a synthesizer ensemble at the Museum of Modern Art

From 1979 to 1983 he was Director of Sales and Marketing at Moog Music. He also worked as a marketing consultant for Roland Corporation, Multivox Music, Norlin Industries, Passport Designs Software and Jim Henson's Muppets. In addition to numerous articles, he has written three books on electronic and computer music.

In 1972 he was one of the founding members of Long Iceland Composers Alliance ( LICA ), which he is president. The following year he lead position preparing the first concert Music By and For Students of LICA. Since 1994 he is a member of the Music Technology Committee of the New York State School Music Association ( NYSSMA ) and juror in the Composition and improvisation Committee. During his teaching at the University Hoftra he founded the Jazz Ensemble, the Electronic Music Studios and The New Music Ensemble.

1995 Deutsch's multimedia opera Dorian was first performed (after Oscar Wilde's novel The Picture of Dorian Gray) at Hofstra Opera Theater. His compositions were, inter alia, at the Music Educators National Conference, the Small Computers and the Arts Network and the Society for Electro acoustic Music in the United States listed. His CD Woman in Darkness was released in 1999, From Moog to Mac 2007. The Meridian Quartet played his String Quartet Preamble & Fugue for Capstone Records a. More than a dozen times, was awarded an ASCAP Award German.
