Herbert Distel

Herbert Distel ( born August 7, 1942 in Bern, Switzerland, lives in Lower Austria ) is a Swiss painter, object artist, filmmaker, video and sound artist. He is known for Photo Art, audiophonische work, conceptual art and sculpture. He is the installer of the world-famous museum drawer.

Work

Herbert Distel spent his childhood in Bern, and received his school and later his artistic training at the School of Art with a two-year visit of the graphic arts class at Fridolin Müller. He traveled to Paris and studied from 1963 to 1964 lithography at the Ecole nationale supérieure des beaux -arts de Paris. After his return to Switzerland, he taught in Bern his studio. He belongs in the 1960s and 1970s, one of the leading representatives of the Bernese Art scene. He was part of the free group of artists Bern 66 and participated in numerous exhibitions in the Kunsthalle Bern and abroad participate.

In the mid- 1960s he created corrugated iron and cardboard reliefs and grappled with light and shadow. He also created large format polyester sculptures.

In 1970 he created the Museum of Drawers, on which he worked until 1977. The Museum of Drawers by Herbert Distel is the smallest museum of modern art in the 20th century with works by over 500 artists. With its Schubladenmuseum he was in 1972 (at that time were only 178 artists in 20 drawers represented ) participants in Documenta 5 in Kassel in the Department of Museums of artists.

In the years 1985-1987 he worked with film techniques and sought the co-operation with the Polish film directors Krzysztof Kieslowski and Edward Żebrowski. Thistle had international success and got numerous video art awards in 1993 for the 18- minute video Fear The Power The images of the sorcerer's apprentice.
