Herbert family

Herbert is the name of an extended Anglo-Welsh noble family.

Founder of the family is William Herbert ( "Black William" ) ( 1423-1469 ), son of William ap Thomas Welsh nobles, the builder of Raglan Castle. He replaced, as well as his brother Richard, his Welsh patronymic ap William by the English family name Herbert. As a partisan of the House of York during the Wars of the Roses he went first to the Baron Herbert and later to the Earl of Pembroke.

The descent before William ap Thomas is largely uncertain. According to its own tradition from the family of one mentioned in the Domesday Book Herbertus Camerarius, a Norman GefolgsmannWilhelm the Conqueror, and his son Henry thesaurarius comes. Meanwhile, Peter 's great-grandson of King John in 1210 received extensive estates in Wales, which were taken from the exiled William de Braose. His descendants acquired through marriage other large estates in South East Wales. Probably the name was Herbert was performed long as Leitname in the family.   • The legitimate descendants of William Herbert ( "Black William" ), 1st Earl of Pembroke: the male lines ( Earls of Pembroke and Herbert of St. Julians ) die out early; Descendants in the female line, the Baron Herbert and Dukes of Beaufort
  • The illegitimate offspring of William Herbert: the Earls of Pembroke ( new award ), of which, in turn, going off the Barons and Marquesses of Powis and Earl of Carnarvon
  • The descendants of his brother Richard Herbert of Coldbrook: the Baron Herbert of Chirbury, the Earls of Powis, and in the female line, the Earl of Plymouth.
