Herbert Holba

Herbert Holba ( born May 7, 1932 in Vienna, † October 26, 1994 ) was an Austrian filmmaker, film critic, film historian and director for film, television and radio.

Life

Self-taught himself Holba busy with the film and all its aspects since his early youth. In 1945 he gained movie photos and movie stills, movie program books, movie posters, videos, documents and all kinds of other articles and materials on the subject of film. This collection he brought in 1965 with Peter Spiegel in which they founded Centre for Film Documentation " ACTION" in Vienna's Augarten A, which soon became the largest private collection on the subject of film in Austria. This film documentation center was established in 2001 the Austrian Film Archive affiliated. In 1965 Holba under the name ACTION also a film club and Austria's first alternative cinema in Vienna - Wieden. Also a film magazine with the same title was published from 1965 to 1969 from him.

In 1962, he wrote with Helmut Blobner 1000 years of film history - the political propaganda film as part of a series of publications of the Vienna Youth Film Clubs. In the 1960s and the early 1970s was Holba screenwriter and director on several short and television films and a feature film. These productions were mostly together with Ernst A. Ekker, Peter Meisel and Martin Radinger. The cinema feature film The first few days had the particularity to have been conceived as a silent film, although it was based on a radio play. The film was also shown in competition at the International Film Festival of Berlin in 1971.

1972 and 1973 Holba worked in the editorial of the film Ethnography books that were published by the German Institute of Film Studies (DIF ) in Wiesbaden. At this time, in 1972, his film studies work began with the book Documentation Illustrated Film-Kurier from 1924 to 1944, which includes 3518 movie program books. Some of his books have been published and self-published his film documentation center, the " Publisher of the Documentation Centre Action ".
