Herbert I, Count of Maine

Herbert I of Maine ( † 1036 ), called Hundeaufwecker ( fran.: eveille - Chien; Latin: Evigilans - canem ), was from 1015 a count of Maine. He was the son and successor of Count Hugo III. from the second house Maine.

As his father once had to Herbert accept the suzerainty of the Count of Anjou over Maine. Herbert tried but after the collapse of the royal central power under King Robert II the Pious to escape this domination by itself usurped royal rights, such as the strike their own coins with his own monogram. Furthermore, he forgave his faithful fiefs which he built castles: Sablé, Château -du -Loir, Mayenne, Laval later, La Ferté -Bernard, St. Calais, and after 1050 Sillé, La Suze, Malicorne, La Milesse, Montfort, Sourches etc.

The offensive occurrence of Count Odo II of Blois led Herbert initially in an alliance with the Count Fulk III. Nerra of Anjou. The name of Herbert's woman is not recorded. With the capture of her husband in Saintes her is but an escape from Fulk succeeded. Their children were:
