Herbert IV, Count of Vermandois

Heribert IV (c. 1032; † around 1080 ) was Count of Vermandois and by marriage, Count of Valois. He was the last Count of Vermandois from the House of Carolingian and thus the last male Carolingians ever.

He was the son and successor of Count Odo of Vermandois († May 25, 1045 ) and inherited him at his death.

Before 1068 he married Adele of Valois, daughter of Rudolf IV, Count of Valois, Crépy, Vitry, Amiens and Vexin. The legacy of the father fell after his death in 1074 Adele's older brother Simon, however, in 1077 entered the monastery and Adele at least the county of Valois inherited that Heribert now governed by the law of his wife.

He had two children:

  • Odo ( Eudes ) II, known as the Mad ( " l' Insensé " ) ( † after 1085 ), ∞ Hadwige
  • Adélaide ( probably * 1065, † 28 September 1120/1124 ) Countess of Vermandois and Valois, ∞ I) 1078 Hugo of France ( † 1101), son of King Henry I of France ( Capet ), ∞ II) 1103 Rainald II ( † before 1162 ), Count of Clermont -en- Beauvaisis (House Clermont )

Heribert's only son Odo apparently suffered from a mental illness, was in any case disinherited by his father. Sole heir was his daughter instead Adélaide that brought his father's property by her first marriage to the Capetians.
