Herbert Kirk

Herbert Victor Kirk ( born June 5, 1912 in Belfast, † 4 March 2006) was a former Protestant Northern Irish politicians of the Ulster Unionist Party ( UUP ).

Life

Herbert Kirk studied at Queen's University of Belfast and worked before his entry into politics, as a chartered accountant ( Chartered Accountant ).

Kirk was a member of the Ulster Unionist Party ( UUP ). Since the election of 23 November 1956 he was a deputy of the Unionist Party to the Northern Ireland Parliament ( Parliament of Northern Ireland ) to. There he represented until 1972 until the dissolution of the Northern Ireland Parliament constituency Belfast Windsor. In Stormont, he soon played a leading role and was eventually appointed Minister.

In 1962 he became a member of the Privy Council of Northern Ireland. From March 1962 to July 1964 he was labor and social affairs minister (Minister of Labour and National Insurance ), July 1964 to April 1965 Education and Teaching Minister (Minister of Education) and from 1965 to 1972 Finance Minister of Northern Ireland (Minister of Finance ).

After the dissolution of the Northern Ireland Assembly and the introduction of Direct Rule ( self-government ) in March 1972, he supported Brian Faulkner, the then leader of the Ulster Unionist Party. Kirk proved to be a close ally of Faulkner in the political debate about the introduction of a split between Unionists and Nationalists executive and the conclusion of the Agreement of Sunningdale.

1973 Kirk was elected for the constituency of South Belfast in the Northern Ireland Assembly; he remained a deputy until May 1974. From January to May 1974, he was again Minister of Finance in the Northern Ireland Executive ( Head of the Department of Finance in the Northern Ireland Executive).

After a health breakdown in May 1974, Kirk withdrew from politics and started his professional career again.
