Herbert Laming, Baron Laming

William Herbert Laming, Baron Laming, of Tewin ( born 19 July 1936) in the County of Hertfordshire Kt CBE DL is a British civil servant and politician, who is a life peer member of the House of Lords since 1998.

Life

Career

After attending school and studying social sciences at the University of Durham Laming was 1961-1968 as a probation officer and most recently Chief Probation Officer in the Probation Service in Nottingham and subsequently to 1971, Assistant to the Head of the Probation of Nottingham. After that, he was from 1971 to 1991 only deputy director and, most recently director of the Social Administration of Hertfordshire. During this time, he was from 1982 to 1983 and President of the Association of Directors of Sozialveraltungen and was nominated in 1985 for his services to the Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

In 1991 he moved to the Ministry of Health and Social Security, in which he will retire in 1998 was chief inspector of the Inspectorate of Social Services until joining. Due to its local merits, in 1996 his appointment as Knight Bachelor, so that henceforth he the additional name "Sir" led.

House of Lords member

After his retirement Laming was a Letters Patent of 27 July 1998 Laird was raised as a life peer with the title Baron Laming, of Tewin in the County of Hertfordshire in the peerage. In the following period was Lord Laming, who was Deputy Lieutenant of Hertfordshire in 1999, and in 2000 chairman of the independent commission of inquiry to review the administration of prisons. Between 2001 and 2003 he was chairman of the commission to investigate the murder of Victoria Climbié, an eight- year-old girl from the Ivory Coast who was murdered on 25 February 2000 by their keepers. Since 2009 he has been Chairman of the Child Protection Association The Protection of Children in England, and since 2011 as the successor of Frances D' Souza, Baroness D' Souza, Chairman of the Group of Cross Bencher in the House of Lords.
