Herbert Lawford

Herbert Fortescue Lawford ( born May 15, 1851 in London, † April 20, 1925 in Dess, Scotland ) was a British tennis player and winner of the 1887 Wimbledon Championships

Life

Lawford was in 1851 in London's Bayswater to the world. He attended Repton School and then studied at the University of Edinburgh.

Lawford took part in 1878 at the age of 27 years at the second edition of the Wimbledon Championships. Between 1880 and 1888 he stood there six times in the final but could only win the title in 1887, when his rival William Renshaw injury did not compete. He also won the first edition of the British Indoor Championships in 1885 and the Irish championships from 1884 until 1886. Recently he took part in 1889 in the tournament of Wimbledon.

Besides the ten -years-younger twin brothers William and Ernest Renshaw Lawford is considered the strongest player of the 1880s. While the strengths of the Renshaw lay in their volleys and smashes at the net, Lawford was an excellent baseline players. He was one of the first players that used the topspin in tennis.

Lawford died in 1925 in Scotland. In 2006, he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
