Herbert Reul

Herbert Reul ( born August 31, 1952 in Langenfeld ) is a German politician ( CDU) and Chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group in the European Parliament.

1975 Reul was chosen as CDU member of the City Council of Leichlingen (Rheinland), where he served until 1992. He also studied education and worked as a teacher after the second state examination in 1981 until 1985. From 1985 to 2004 Reul belonged to the state parliament of North Rhine -Westphalia, most recently as Vice Chairman of the CDU. From 1990 to 2007 he was chairman next, then Honorary Chairman of the CDU in the Rheinisch - Bergisch district. From 1991 to 2003 he was general secretary of the CDU North Rhine -Westphalia, since 1987 member of the national executive of the party. Since 2003 he has been District Chairman of the CDU in the Bergische Land and was from 2003 to 2009 a member of the Broadcasting Council of the West German Radio. Since 2009 he is deputy member of the WDR Broadcasting.

In 2004, he retired from the North Rhine - Westphalia state, since he was elected in the 2004 European elections to the European Parliament. He is a member of the Group of the European People's Party, a member of the CDU, and was among other shadow rapporteur of Parliament for the Framework Decision on data retention. In the European elections in 2009 Reul was re-elected. From 2009 to 2012, he was Chairman of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, he was also deputy member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. Since January 2012, he has been chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group in the European Parliament, the largest with 42 MPs National Party delegation in the European Parliament.

Reul is also Chairman of the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with the Korean Peninsula. In July 2013, traveled as one of the first Western politicians North Korea since the North Korean nuclear tests in the spring of 2013.

Political positions

Energy policy

Reul is especially involved in energy policy and is considered a critic of both the German energy transition as well as the Renewable Energy Act. Reul was 2012/2013 European Parliament rapporteur for renewable energies.

Research policy

In the negotiations on the new EU Research Framework Programme Horizon 2020 Reul has introduced a proposal to bring research weaker EU member states to the front: The " Teaming Excellence" initiative aims to bring together promising regions with already established excellent research facilities and in a contest with to pit for the construction of a center of excellence against each concept. Economic and monetary policy

Herbert Reul support the crisis policy of the federal government, which is esp. aimed at fiscal consolidation and structural reforms in the euro zone and rejects a Europeanisation of the debt by EUR Bonds or debt funds from decided. Reul 2013 was chief negotiator for the CDU / CSU in the sub-group " Bank Regulation, Europe and the euro ' in the coalition negotiations between the CDU / CSU and SPD to form a new government.
