Herbert Roper Barrett

Herbert Roper Barrett (* November 24, 1873 in Upton, Kent, Greater London today, † July 27, 1943 in Horsham, West Sussex ) was a British tennis player. Although he was able to win several individual titles and twice in the Wimbledon singles final (1908 and 1911 ) was that he was a doubles specialist. With Arthur Gore he made at the beginning of the 20th century one of the most successful double their era, they won 1908 Olympic gold medal in the competition hall and in 1909 Wimbledon champion and German indoor champion. At the Olympic Games in 1912 Barret failed in the hall title defense in the semifinals and finished fourth, but won with Helen Aitchison the silver medal in Hallenmixwettbewerb.

Barrett was a few smaller titles - so in 1898 the first of a total of 17 Suffolk Championships - 1900 celebrating his first major success; he won the Open Belgian Championship in the individual for the first four years in a row, stand with Clarence Hobart in his first Wimbledon final and double formed with Ernest Black British double at the first edition of the Davis Cup. In 1903 he was part of the Davis Cup team that won the first for the United Kingdom the Davis Cup. Barrett played until 1919 again and again in the Davis Cup and was in the 1930 captain of the British team, he could lead to four Cup victories.

But Barrett successful time he had a double with Arthur Gore and later with Charles Dixon; he stood with two each in three consecutive years in the final of Wimbledon (1908-1910 and 1912-1914 with Gore with Dixon ) and won three of competitions (1909, 1912 and 1913 ), with Gore, he also won the Olympic Dopplebewerb in the Hall, 1908.

Barrett was also a good football player. Around the turn of the century in one of the best non- league teams, the Corinthian FC played After his playing time Barrett was in the 1920 President of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, as well as Chief Commoner of the City of London.
