Herbert Tichy

Herbert Tichy ( born June 1, 1912 in Vienna, † September 26, 1987 ) was an Austrian travel writer, geologist, journalist and climber. In addition to his travelogues, he also published numerous adventure novels for young people.

Life

1933 took Tichy together with Max Reisch a trip on a Puch motorcycle to India. As a result, a second trip to India in 1935 he rounded disguised as a pilgrim the holy Mount Kailash in Tibet. During this trip, he tried with two companions made ​​the first ascent of Gurla Mandhata in alpine style, but had to turn back to approximately 7200 m. Tichy wrote, among other things, for the bourgeois magazine The Week; there appeared in 1935, his " image Report: Achmed reads Goethe - German teachers in Afghanistan." After his doctorate in geology Tichy traveled to Alaska in 1938. The Second World War and the years up to 1948 he spent in the Republic of China and Japan, where he worked as a geologist and journalist. In the fall of 1953 he succeeded the first crossing of western Nepal.

On October 19, 1954 ascended Herbert Tichy, together with the Tyrolean Sepp Jöchler Sherpa Pasang Dawa Lama and, as the first 8188 meter high Cho Oyu. A few days before the summit victory Tichy suffered severe frostbite on his hands, as a result he lost a finger. This finger was buried to the north of Kailash 1987 by Fritz Moravec.

In 1993 in Vienna Waehring (18th district) of Tichyweg was named after him.
