Herbie Steward

Herbert " Herbie " Stewart ( born May 7, 1926 in Los Angeles ) is an American jazz saxophonist (tenor, alto) and in addition also a flutist.

He played in the band of Barney Bigard, Freddie Slack, from 1944 to 1946 with Artie Shaw, with Alvino Rey, Butch Stone and Gene Roland. Steward was known as a member of Woody Herman's Second Herd ( 1947), as one of the Four Brothers - next to Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, and Serge Chaloff. After that, he was in Los Angeles at Red Norvo (1948 ), in Artie Shaw ( 1949), Tommy Dorsey, Elliott Lawrence (1950 /51), Harry James ( 1951-1954 ) and Al John (1959 /60). After that, he was primarily a studio musician. He also worked as a sideman for Billie Holiday, Chet Baker, Barney Kessel, Benny Goodman, Art Pepper, Roy Eldridge and others and released several albums as a bandleader.
