Lblels

Herentals is a Belgian city in the Flanders region on the banks of the Albert Canal with 27 368 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2012). It consists of the main village and the hamlets Morkhoven and Noorderwijk.

Turnhout located 18 kilometers north-east, Antwerp 30 km west of Brussels and about 48 kilometers south-west.

Traffic

Herentals has three highway exits on the A13 / E 313 In the village there is a regional railway station on the railway line Antwerpen-Lier-Herentals-Mol-Hasselt/Weert (Netherlands).

Antwerp airport is the nearest regional airport and the Brussels National Airport near the capital Brussels is an airport of international importance.

Attractions

  • The Town Hall was built as the Cloth Hall ( Gewandhaus ) in 1400. Part of this building is the belfry from 1590 with a Carillon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site " belfries in Belgium and France".
  • The Begijnhof with late Gothic church ( 1600), a gatehouse of 1622 and houses from the 17th century was founded in 1266 and housed in the 15th century about 300 Beguines. It was severely damaged in the 16th century when iconoclasm, but later rebuilt.
