Heretaunga Plains

The Heretaunga Plains are a plain in the east of the North Island of New Zealand.

The alluvial deposits of the plane was deposited by the rivers Tutaekuri, Ngaruroro and Tukituki River in the area of ​​its lower reaches at the south end of the opening into the Pacific Hawke Bay.

The Tutaekuri River runs east of Kaweka Range and flows directly south of Napier. The Ngaruroro River extends approximately 100 km southeast of Kaweka Range, then eastward. It flows 10 kilometers south of Napier in the City of Clive. The Tukituki River springs from the Ruahine Ranges and flows for a distance of 105 km to the east first, then to the northeast. It happened while the city Waipukurau and flows near Hastings in the Hawke Bay.

The plain extends inland to the southwest and has an area of about 1000 km ². The cities of Napier, Hastings and Havelock North lie in the plane extending almost to the largest city of the district, Waipukurau, expands.

The fertile soil and the warm, dry climate of the region create good conditions for viticulture, fruit growing and horticulture. The southern region Hawke's Bay is one of the best wine regions of New Zealand.
