Hergest Ridge

View from the top

The Hergest Ridge is a mountain on the border between England and Wales, on the edge of the Welsh Marches.

Location

The greater part and also the peaks lie on the English side in Herefordshire, the smaller part on the Welsh side in Powys. Nearby mountains are the Bradnor Hill in the northeast and the Gwaunceste Hill in the west. On the southeast side of the Hergest Ridge River Arrow flows along. At Arrow is also the nearest town, Kington.

During the Second World War Ridge agriculture was operated on the Hergest. Today, he is, as before, grassy, partly marshy. In some areas, a large area is growing bracken.

Tourist

About the Hergest Ridge, but not over the top, the long-distance trail Offa 's Dyke Path runs along. At the foot of Hergest Ridge Hergest Croft Gardens is landscaped.

Relationship with Mike Oldfield

In a situated at the foot of Hergest Ridge house called The Beacon Mike Oldfield lived for several years. Here he wrote the music album of the same name and the following album " Ommadawn ", which was mostly recorded here as well, and in which the Hergest Ridge is mentioned in the play On Horseback. The area around the Hergest Ridge has now become a popular destination for Oldfields fan base. The Beacon is now a guest house.
