Herman II (archbishop of Cologne)

Hermann II, also Heriman (c. 995; † February 11, 1056 ) was from 1036 to 1056 Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Cologne.

Life

Hermann was the son of Count Palatine Ezzo of Lorraine and his wife Matilda, a daughter of Emperor Otto II.

His sisters were Richeza Queen of Poland, which is buried in Cologne Cathedral and Theophano, who was from 1039 to 1058 abbess of the pen food.

In 1036 he was appointed by Konrad II to the Archbishop of Cologne. As Archbishop of Cologne, he baptized in 1051 Henry IV, the son of the Emperor Henry III. and his wife Empress Agnes. Three years later, on July 17, 1054, he crowned Henry IV, King of Germany. Against this crowning put the Archbishop of Mainz Luitpold I protest, because he claimed the right of the coronation itself.

Hermann developed an extensive construction activity to Cologne to make an image of Rome and be so - by the right to crown the German kings - vested primacy over the Archbishops of Trier and Mainz to consolidate. Thus, the Cologne Cathedral should correspond to the former St. Peter's Basilica. The extended under Hermann and his sister Ida Church of St. Maria im Kapitol should correspond Santa Maria Maggiore. Hermann is also founder of the likely from St. Maria im Kapitol coming and now located in the Diocesan Museum in Cologne Hermann Ida Cross.

Hermann II, which can also be called the Noble, was buried in Cologne Cathedral.
