Herman Ouseley, Baron Ouseley

Herman George Ouseley, Baron Ouseley ( born March 24, 1945 in Guyana) is a British politician and life peer.

Life and career

Ouseley was born the son of a baker and a nurse in Guyana. His father died when he was seven years old. 1957, at the age of 11 years, he came with his mother to England. He grew up in a studio in Brixton, south London.

He attended William Penn Comprehensive School in Peckham, which he left in 1963 with two A Levels. On Catford College a diploma acquired in trade Municipal Admistration to be administrative officer with the target. Then Ouseley worked as a civil servant in the town and community management at the former Middlesex County Council. From 1963 to 1970 he worked there as a city planning official, from 1970 to 1973 then as a responsible social worker for the elderly. From 1973 to 1979 he worked as a community relations executive for community affairs. From 1979 to 1981 he worked as a Race Relations Policy Officer at Lambeth Council. From 1981 to 1984 he was then Race Relations Policy Officer at the Greater London Council. There he headed the department of ethnic minorities. From 1984 to 1986 he was Deputy Chief Executive Officer in the London Borough of Lambeth district. From 1986 to 1990 Director of Education and Chief Executive Officer at the Inner London Education Authority, From 1990 to 1993 he was then Chief Executive Officer for the London Borough of Lambeth.

He was Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE ) in 1993. He held until 2000 this office. Ouseley continued during his tenure, particularly for the restoration of declining credibility in relation to the work of the Commission for Racial Equality in. From 2000 to 2005 he was president of Different Realities Partnership Ltd, an organization that specialized in advising clients on issues of gender equality, cultural diversity and self-marketing strategies. From 2002 to 2005 he was also the President of the Local Government Association. Since 2005, Ouseley works as an independent consultant on issues of equality.

Ouseley exerts numerous other offices in different organizations and associations. He has been Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Policy Research Institute on Ageing and Ethnicity at Bradford University ( since 1986) of Kick It Out, a campaign against racism, discrimination and homophobia in football (since 1993 ) and the PRESET Education and Training Trust ( since 1997). He is also Chairman of the Caribbean Advisory Group for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He is since 2006 a trustee of the Manchester United Foundation. He is patron of the Presentation Housing Association, a charitable housing association (since 1990), the Daneford Trust, a nonprofit organization that cultural exchange programs for black and colored students (since 1991) and the National Black Police Association (since 2007).

In 1981 he published the book The System. He has also written numerous articles and brochures on gender equality issues and matters of local government and local government.

Membership in the House of Lords

On 26 June 2001, he was appointed in the London Borough of Southwark for Life peer as Baron Ouseley, of Peckham Rye. In the House of Lords he sits as a cross Bencher. On 29 March 2010 he supported, together Tessa Blackstone, Baroness Blackstone, the newly appointed Life peer Michael Bichard, Baron Bichard at its inauguration.

Honors

Ouseley is the holder of numerous honorary doctorates and honorary dignities. He holds honorary doctorates from the University of Edinburgh, Sheffield Hallam University, Bradford University, the University of Leicester, Leeds Metropolitan University, the University of Warwick, Oxford Brookes University, University of Greenwich, London South Bank University, London Metropolitan University, the University of East London and the University of Brighton. In 1997 he was elevated to Knight.
