Herman Salling

Herman Salling (* November 20, 1919, † May 8, 2006 ) was a Danish businessman and entrepreneur.

Family

Herman Salling was married in first marriage with Lissi Petersen, who died of puerperal fever. Similarly, the common child died shortly after birth. He married his second wife Sys Brammer, with whom he had daughters Cathrine (died 2004) and Mariann. In 1977 he married his third wife, Karin.

Entrepreneur

The father Ferdinand Salling created in 1906 the basis for the department store chain Salling with a factory trade, which developed into Salling department store.

1953 took over Herman Salling father's shop in the pedestrian zone of Aarhus. That was the starting point for the supermarket chain Jysk supermarked 1960. During the same year he opened the first Føtex supermarket. Two years later came the department store add Salling in Aalborg.

In order to obtain the necessary capital for further expansion of business activities, Herman Salling went in 1964 a co-operation with the shipowner AP Møller, the silent partner was while Salling took over sole management of the company.

1964 is called the Super Jysk Marked Dansk Supermarked renamed. 1999 Salling withdrew from the management of the company, but remained on the board. The corporation had 2001 30.000 people and generated a turnover of DKK 46.7 billion (approx. 5.8 billion Euros ).

In the line of stores Salling gave clear directives and ensured a tight organization, strongly limited the freedom of workers. He dismissed employees who did not conform to his ideas of honesty, diligence, precision and performance of duty. Every Saturday morning called Salling its senior executives to a conference together because he said that the top management should not have free, while sellers customers served.
