Herman Simm

Herman Simm (* May 29, 1947 in Suure -Jaani ) is a former Estonian government official. He was sentenced to a long prison sentence for espionage against NATO in February 2009.

Life

From 2001 to 2006 he was head of the security department of the Estonian Ministry of Defence and so had access to secret documents and the encryption system Elcrodat, which is used for message delivery within NATO. From 2006 he worked as a consultant in the Ministry of Interior. On 21 September 2008 he was arrested on suspicion of having passed classified information to Russia, said to have worked for its intelligence SWR Simm.

Be Simm pleaded guilty before the District Court Harju On February 25, 2009. He was sentenced to twelve and a half years in prison and to pay the equivalent of 1.28 million euros in damages.
