Herman van den Bergh

Hermann of the Bergh ( born August 2, 1558 ' s-Heer mountain; † August 12, 1611 in Spa) was a military commander in general staa matic and later in the service of Spain during the Eighty Years' War. He was the Count von Bergh, Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece, and from 1593 until his death governor of Spanish money.

Life

Hermann was the eldest son of Count William IV of the Bergh (1537-1586) and Countess Maria of Nassau ( 1539-1599 ).

He made first career in staatischem services. He was captain and garrison commander in 's -Heer mountain and Doetinchem. Like his father and his brothers, he moved in 1584 to the side of the Spaniards, where he could continue his career.

At the siege of Deventer in 1591 by Prince Maurice of Orange Hermann commanded the Spanish garrison of the town of Deventer, but had to give up after ten days. Two years later he became governor of Spanish money. This office he retained until his death in 1611. He was buried in Braine- l'Alleud.

Marriage and issue

Hermann married in 1599 Maria Mencia of Wittem ( 1581-1613 ), Marchioness of Bergen op Zoom, and had a daughter with her:
