Hermann Finck

Hermann Finck (* 1495 in Pirna, † December 28, 1558 in Wittenberg ) was a German music theorist, composer and organist.

Life

Relatively little is known about Finck. One knows only that he has learned his musical education in a chapel of King Ferdinand I.. 1554 settled in Wittenberg Finck down to give lessons of music. In the circle of educational institutions of the university, he lectured on the Ars musica, published in 1555 in the former publisher of Georg Rhau a wedding song with 5 votes and a grave singing with 4 votes. Decisive he had so affected Melanchthon music theory.

Also in the same publishing house published his main work " Practica Musica Hermann Finckii, exempla variorum signorum proportionum et canonum, Judicium de tonis ac quaedam de Arte suaviter et et artificiose cantandi continens " which includes remarkable information about the former music states. After Finck had written a song on Sigismund of Brandenburg in 1558, he died a respected figure in Wittenberg, where he had held the position of organist at the Castle Church in Wittenberg.
