Hermann Geiger
Hermann Geiger ( born October 27, 1914 in Savièse at Sion, Switzerland, † August 26 1966 in Sion) was a Swiss rescue and pioneer of flight glacier (glacier pilot ) in the Alps.
Hermann Geiger was a Valais glacier pilot of world renown and one of the founders of the Swiss Air Rescue ( REGA ). He was the inventor of a landing technique for snow slopes to rescue climbers in distress. He led more than 600 daring rescue with his single-engine Piper PA-18 through the high mountains. In 1966, he was killed after he collided shortly after starting with a glider.
In 1958 he played himself in the semi-documentary feature film Swiss SOS - Glacier Pilot ( Director: Victor Vicas ). Was published in 1961 in the German book club, a book authored by him book entitled The glacier pilot, in which he describes his life and his flying experiences.
Geiger was also a member of the gliding group Winterthur.
