Hermann Giliomee

Hermann Buhr Giliomee ( born April 4, 1938 in Sterkstroom, Eastern Cape) is a South African historian, political scientist, author and columnist, who is considered one of the most prestigious South African social scientists of our time. He worked from 1983 to 2002 as a professor of political science at the University of Cape Town and has been an associate professor of history at the University of Stellenbosch.

Life

Hermann Giliomee was born in 1938 in Sterkstroom and completed from 1956 to 1961, a study of history at the University of Stellenbosch, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1971. After finishing his studies, he was initially 1963/1964 worked for the South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs, from 1967 to 1982, he served then as a lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch. In the years 1973 and 1977/1978 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Yale University as well as 1982/1983 when Jan Smuts Fellow at the University of Cambridge. From 1983 to 2002 he was Professor of Political Science at the University of Cape Town, since he has an associate professor of history at the University of Stellenbosch held. From 1995 to 1997 he served as president of the South African Institute of Race Relations.

Hermann Giliomee, who is regarded as politically liberal and before 1990 came into existence as a critic of apartheid, 1984 was a co-founder of the Afrikaans -language monthly magazine The Suid - Afrikaan. In addition, he published in the 1980s and 1990s regularly in various South African newspapers, as in the Cape Times and the Rand Daily Mail. Since then, he writes a political column for the newspaper Die Burger, Beeld and Volksblad. He is the author of a number of academic publications and several books on the history and politics of South Africa, and the relationship between the various ethnic groups in the country. When his most important works are a historical treatise on the Boers, entitled "The African - Biography of a People", which was referred to by various critics as his magnum opus, as well as co-authored with Bernard Mbenga book " New History of South Africa".

Hermann Giliomee lives in Stellenbosch. He is married and father of two daughters since 1965.
