Hermann Hamelmann

Hermann Hamelmann (* 1526 in Osnabrück, † June 26, 1595 in Oldenburg ) was a Lutheran theologian and historian. He is regarded as a reformer of Westphalia.

Life

Hamelmann attended the grammar school in the imperial city of Dortmund. After studying theology in Cologne and Mainz he received in 1550 in Münster ordination. In the episcopal city, he found his first job as a measuring priest at the Servatius Church. Two years later he went as pastor to Kamen. He turned to the Reformation. However, when he publicly confessed in 1553 to the Reformation influenced understanding of the Christian faith for the Trinity hard, he had to leave the city. Following a stay in Wittenberg, he used to share with Philipp Melanchthon in matters of doctrine of the Eucharist. In August 1553, Hermann Hamelmann preacher at the New Town Marienkirche in Bielefeld, from 1556 to 1568 then pastor at St. Mary's Church in Lemgo. He changed the course of the conflicts of the Reformation very often its site of action and traveled a lot.

1573 Hamelmann went on the recommendation of Nicholas Selnecker to Oldenburg, where he served as senior pastor of the Lamberti church and superintendent of the county of Oldenburg until his death. The enforcement of the eponymous church order in the county counted it among his most outstanding achievements.

Hamelmann wrote numerous works that are for churches, regional and local history and genealogy to have significance today.

1564/1565 he published a comprehensive 'list of notable men of " Westphalia ( Illustrium Westphaliae virorum libri 1-6). 1586/1587 he published his most important work, the " History of Reformation Westphalia and Lower Saxony " ( Historia ecclesiastica renati evangelii by inferiorem Saxoniam et Westphaliam ). In addition, he also wrote genealogical records of the then existing and extinct large families Westphalia and Lower Saxony.

In addition, Hermann Hamelmann author of the first printed " Oldenburger Chronik" ( Oldenburgisch Chronicon ). He also established the first known attempt at interpretation until today the history of the external stones.

Finally Hamelmann considered by the adoption of the first Oldenburg church order, at the same time school regulations in 1573, as one of the pioneers and founders of the elementary school system.

In 2005, a film about Hamel 's reformatory work in Bielefeld was filmed. Served as template a custom built in the 9th grade of the Helmholtz -Gymnasium Bielefeld in teaching Latin translation of part of the written Latin autobiography.

In Dortmund Hamelmann street is named after him; as in Lemgo, Bielefeld and Oldenburg.
