Hermann Knackfuss

Hermann Joseph Wilhelm Knackfuß, ( born August 11, 1848 in Knowledge ( victory ); † May 17, 1915 in Kassel) was Academy teacher, art writer, illustrator and painter of history and portraits. He was the brother of Bauforschers and archaeologists Hubert Knackfuß.

Life

Hermann Knackfuß studied from 1869 to 1874 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. He was a pupil of Eduard Eduard von Gebhardt and Bendemann. As a volunteer, he took part in the 1870 Franco-German war. 1874 was for two history paintings to the great state price plus scholarship for a stay in Rome from 1875 to 1878. 1880 he was appointed to the Kassel Academy.

Knackfuß created numerous historical paintings and designs to ceiling murals in public buildings, in particular, had events in the history of Prussia on the topic. At first, his paintings recorded by a partially pedantic acting realism especially the costume historical details. From about 1890 he used for his historical paintings more and more the painting technique achievements of Impressionism. He was also a popular portraitist of the Prussian nobility.

1895 gave him Kaiser Wilhelm II the development of its allegorical drawings " peoples of Europe, maintain your most sacred possessions " and "Nobody 's sake, no one hurt ."

As representatives of the academic history painting and illustrator of Borussian history his work has largely fallen into oblivion after 1945, especially since many of his paintings were destroyed during the war or afterwards. He is often known only as the author of numerous biographies.
