Hermann Korb

Hermann basket ( * 1656 in Niese, † December 23, 1735 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German architect of the Baroque, who worked mainly in the Principality of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel in the city of Braunschweig, but also in Blankenburg and in the Duchy of Magdeburg.

Life and work

The source location to the life of a young basket is meager; whether he actually first learned the carpenter craft and later came to architecture as an autodidact, so is controversial. In his life he served as appears from his epitaph, six dukes of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel: for example, Rudolf August, Anton Ulrich and August Wilhelm. Already during his lifetime, but even more so after his death in 1735, he was considered one of the most important architect of his time.

His grave with epitaph is located in St. John's Church in Wolfenbüttel. He is survived by his second wife, who lived in the " Hofbeamtenhaus " that had built for her husband and a son, whose only godfather in 1692 was Duke Anton Ulrich.

Construction

Basket, from 1689 first princely " Bauvogt " in Wolfenbüttel, then 1692 " Bauverwalter ," first worked under or later together with the equally famous architect Johann Balthasar Lauterbach, whose successor he described as " master builder " in 1704. He held the highest position in the ducal building administration and was involved in all major construction projects in Wolfenbüttel, Brunswick and the surrounding area by having them either planned, executed, supervised or examined.

Its construction was brisk, so in his 40-year creative period a variety of different buildings arose. Many of his works are no longer available, since they were created almost exclusively in the framework construction ( to imitate stone building) and as quickly fell into disrepair. Basket work included both houses, and public buildings, churches and residences and pleasure palaces, one of which was built in 1688-1697 Castle Salzdahlum and the new residential palace in Braunschweig (from 1718) are certainly his most famous works. Other famous works include, among others, built 1706-1710 rotunda in Wolfenbüttel ( in Lessing worked since 1770 ) and the reconstruction ( 1715-1717 ) of the lock Wolfenbüttel into a baroque residence.

Until his death in 1735, just one year after his retirement, it was Bin managed to dominate the construction industry in the Duchy of Brunswick -Wolfenbüttel over a period of 40 years time. Basket was therefore in his lifetime an institution and highly respected in his profession; He is thus in a row with the most important architects of the Baroque in Germany.
