Hermann of Dorpat

Hermann I of Buxthoeven (also Buxhöwden, Buxhoeveden, * 1163 in Bexhövede, † 1248 ) was from 1224 to 1247 the first bishop of Dorpat.

Life

First, Hermann was of Buxthoeven abbot of the monastery in Bremen Paul before he was appointed on April 10, 1220 Bishop of Leal ( Lihula ). On July 21, 1224 succeeded his brother Albrecht of Buxthoeven, the Bishop of Riga, to enforce his influence against King Waldemar of Denmark and the Livonian Order, also in Estonia and deploy Hermann there as bishop of Dorpat (Tartu ). Hermann founded the cathedral in Tartu in 1242 and resulted in the Battle on the Ice a force of German and Danish crusaders, local auxiliary troops and knights of the Teutonic Order of Alexander Nevsky, which he lost.

Hermann was the founder of the family of the Barons of Buxhöwde, which soon fell during the Estonian history in Prussian, Swedish and Russian services and their descendants now live in Germany, Finland and Russia.
