Hermann Paul

Hermann Otto Theodor Paul ( born August 7, 1846 in Salbke, † December 29, 1921 in Munich) was a German germanistischer medievalist, linguist and lexicographer. Paul is a member of the neo-grammarians.

Life

Hermann Paul was born the son of a master mason and Kossethen ( = material goods dealer) in today eingemeindeten to Magdeburg village Salbke. After visiting the village school in Salbke he moved in 1859 to the Pädagogium the Monastery of Our Lady in Magdeburg. Private lessons he took with Franz Heyne. In 1893 he accepted the appointment of a full professorship for German Philology at the University of Munich as successor to Matthias Lexer, 1909 where he became the rector of the university. 1905 Paul married 59 years. Since 1864, he suffered from an eye disease, which for almost total blindness later led, so he was released in 1916 from the obligation to lecture, and was instructed in the further work on helpers.

Scientific performance

As one of the founders and exponents of the " neogrammarian " school Paul became one of the most significant research personalities in the history of German linguistics. Him as the taxonomist of neogrammarian school we owe many important initiatives and insights particularly for semantics, lexicography and Sprachhistoriographie.
