Hermann Riedel

Hermann Riedel ( born January 2, 1847 in Burg (near Magdeburg ); † October 6, 1913 in Braunschweig ) was a German composer.

Life and work

Riedel studied at the Vienna Conservatory with Josef Dachs piano and Felix Otto Dessoff composition. In 1874, he was a coach at the Vienna Court Opera. Arthur Schnitzler reported in his autobiography youth in Vienna, that he had received piano lessons from Riedel at this time and that he in his first novel The way out as an episode figure have let him perform.

1878 Riedel was located in Braunschweig, where he was Kapellmeister at the Ducal Court Theatre. From 1882 to 1911 he was Kapellmeister to the court orchestra Brunswick and director of the ensemble of the court theater.

Riedel is primarily known as a composer of Scheffel 's trumpet songs, a song cycle, he Trumpeter of Säckingen by Joseph Victor von Scheffel wrote on texts from the popular " epic poem". He also composed the comic opera The Accolade, and a number of chamber works. To this day, his choral carols such as O Holy Night or Silent Night, Holy Night laid and listed.
