Hermann Schwartze

Hermann Hugo Rudolf Schwartze ( born September 7, 1837 in Neuhof, Pomerania; † August 20, 1910 at Castle Tannenfeld at Ronneburg ) was a physician and the first German professor of Otolaryngology at the University of ear clinic in Halle.

Life

As the son of the landowner Johann Wilhelm Hermann Schwartze Schwartze was born at Gut Neuhof ( Pomerania ) on 7 September 1837. At the University of Würzburg, he studied with Anton Friedrich Freiherr von Troeltsch, at the Humboldt University in Berlin in August Lucae. At the Humboldt University in Berlin in 1859 he received his doctorate of medicine and graduated as the study from. Subsequently, he worked as a military doctor, then as an assistant physician at the University of Würzburg. In 1863 he qualified as a professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Halle. After he had opened his own ears hospital, the University in 1868 he was appointed extraordinary professor of otology, so he was the first German professor in this field. In the campaign against France ( Franco-German War), he worked as a doctor at the field hospital of the fourth army, for which he was awarded the Iron Cross second class. 1873 promoted to salaried associate professor, he was ordinary honorary professor in 1896, 1903 finally full professor at the University of Halle. Overall, he had been several times worked as a general practitioner.

Later ill Schwartze from a nervous illness, which was not curable, so he gave up the professorship and a sanatorium visited. Finally, he died on 20 August 1910. His successor was Alfred thinkers. Schwartzes grave is located on the Halle Stadtgottesacker.

Services

Schwartze belongs with Adam Politzer and Anton von Troeltsch of the founders of scientific otology, he promoted the pathological anatomy of the ear and the surgical treatment of diseases of the ear. In operations, he pierced the eardrum, which was avoided by other surgeons. He is one of the pioneers of ear surgery and going through the development of a new technique of antrostomy and mastoidectomy and radical surgery of the middle ear with suppurative mastoiditis and chronic otitis the University of Halle became a center of ear surgery.

For his services he was elected to several scientific societies, he was an honorary member of the American otological society. 1907 Festschrift in honor of him was made, and he had received the Red Eagle of Prussia third class and the Prussian Crown, second class. In addition, the University of Halle founded the Hermann Schwartze Medal.
