Hermann Teuchert

Hermann Teuchert ( born March 3, 1880 in Loppow in Kreis Landsberg ( Warta ); † January 13, 1972 in Heidelberg; Complete name: Hermann August Teuchert ) was a German specialist in German and Dialektologe. He was a pupil of Sigmund Feist in Reichenheim 's orphanage.

Life and work

Born as a farmer's son Hermann Teuchert attended high school in the country and the mountain Joachimsthalsche Gymnasium in Berlin. He studied in Strasbourg and Berlin classical philology, history and German. Among his academic teachers include Ulrich von Wilamowitz- Moellendorff, Karl Julius Neumann, Wilhelm Schulze, Erich Schmidt and Gustav Roethe. Early his interest in the German grammar and the German dialects was piqued. With a " sound and Flexionslehre the Neumark dialect " he received his doctorate in Berlin in 1907. In the same year Teuchert worked as an assistant at Rheinische dictionary in Bonn. Here arose first contact with the Dutch language. From 1910 to 1920 Hermann Teuchert worked as senior teacher in Berlin. Addition to his teaching activities, he devoted himself to scientific work. With Wilhelm Seelmann together he laid the foundation for a Brandenburg dictionary. He was co-editor since 1913, since 1919 the sole editor of the "Journal for German dialects ", later " Teuthonista " to which all the leading dialect researchers were in close relationship.

Appointed in 1919 to the University of Rostock, Teuchert took there in 1920 as Associate Professor of Low German his lectures and exercises on Low German literature and grammar, via Dutch, phonetics, folk and vernacular customer on. Long before he even took the Chair of German Language and older German literature from 1934, he extended the field of his lectures to the entire range of German literature and linguistics.

In 1920 Gustav Roethe had won him to cooperate in the German dictionary founded by the Brothers Grimm. In over 30 years of work, he wrote the 15th volume of this largest German linguistic enterprise. He was treading new ground by assigning to the facts in the representation of the speech material to their proper place, the dialects heranzog extensive and thereby tracked down the geographical scope and the social stratification of language.

All his love and most of its work force then was the Mecklenburg dictionary, the " Wossidlo / Teuchert ".
