Hermann Usener

Hermann Carl Usener ( born October 23, 1834 in Weilburg, † 21 October 1905 in Bonn ) was a German classical philologist and scholar of religion.

Usener studied since 1853 in Heidelberg, Munich, Göttingen and Bonn, where he was 1857/58 his doctorate with a dissertation Analecta Theophrastea. From 1858 to 1861 he was a teacher at the Joachimsthal Gymnasium Berlin. On May 7, 1861 Usener associate professor at the University and the Canton of Bern in school, in the summer semester 1863 professor in Greifswald. For the summer semester 1866 he became successor Friedrich Wilhelm Ritschl at Bonn University, where he remained until his retirement on 13 June 1902. Together with Franz Bücheler he made the University of Bonn as a center of that classical philology. 1874/75 he was Dean, 1882/83 Rector.

Family

His parents were Georg Friedrich Usener ( born August 20, 1789 † April 15, 1854 ) Country - top mayor in Weilburg and his wife Charlotte Henriette Caroline Vogler (* 1798, † 1855).

Usener married on September 4, 1866 in Marburg Caroline (Lily) Dilthey ( born February 25, 1846 † March 14, 1920 ). She was the sister of the philosopher Wilhelm Dilthey and the archaeologist Karl Dilthey. Page daughter Maria married in 1899 the classical scholar Albrecht Dieterich. His son Karl Albert Hermann (1876-1928) was lieutenant.
