Word origin

Hermetically is a detectable since the 16th century in the German onomastic formation after Hermes Trismegistus (Greek Ἑρμῆς Τρισμέγιστος, " triple greatest Hermes " ), the legendary author of the Hermetic writings and father of alchemy. It represents a syncretic fusion of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth

For the purposes of Hermeticism as a secret doctrine is hermetically directly back to Hermes Trismegistus as the alleged author. In the more general sense of seclusion, it is borrowed from neo-classical Latin hermetice, which in turn is due to the neoclassical sigillum Hermetis ( " Seal of Hermes "); this is supposed to have glass tubes sealed airtight.
