Hernández-Camacho's night monkey

The Hernández- Camacho Nachtaffe ( Aotus jorgehernandezi ) is a primate of the group of night monkeys ( Aotidae ). The species was first described in 2007, the name honors the naturalist Jorge Hernández- Camacho.

Of this kind is so far only a single specimen known, a female, which in its karyotype differs from all other members of the owl monkey. Like all night monkey is the Hernández- Camacho Nachtaffe a relatively small primate with big brown eyes that are surrounded by white boxes. There is a broad black stripe between the eyes. Striking is the dense white fur on the inside of the arms. However, the type specimen could not be found at rescanning.

The specimen was found in human captivity in the Colombian department of Quindio. Its exact origin is unknown, it supposedly comes from the Parque de los Nevados in the border area between Quindio and Risaralda. This area is currently expected to distribution area of the Panama owl monkeys, which occurs in Panama and western Colombia. Maybe a part of this area is occupied by the new type, but this can only be clarified by further studies.
