Hernando County, Florida

The Hernando County is a county located in the state of Florida in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Brooksville.

Geography

The county has an area of 1,526 square kilometers, of which 287 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Citrus County, Sumter County, Pasco County.

History

Around 1840, the Fort DeSoto was built in the northeast of present-day Hernando County. Fort Desoto was a small base and a stopover on the way to Tampa. At that time, the much larger Hernando County was formed on February 27, 1843 from portions of Alachua County, named after Hernando de Soto. From March 6, 1844 to December 24, 1850 it was renamed " Benton County ". 1854, the small port town of Bayport was the seat of administration. 1856, the city was renamed in Brooksville. 1855 donated the city's founder, Joseph Hale, a piece of land for a county courthouse in the center of present-day Brooksville. On January 2, 1887, divided into three independent county by the Government of the Hernando County Florida: In the Pasco County in the south, Citrus County to the north and the Hernando County in the middle. Since the boundaries of the Hernando County have remained unchanged.

According to the census in 2010 lived in Hernando County 172 778 people in 84 377 households. The population density was 139.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.5 % White, 5.1% Black or African American, 0.4% Indigenous and 1.1% Asian Americans. 1.9% were members of other ethnic groups and 2.0% in different ethnic groups. 10.3% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 43.0 % of all households lived in 25.8 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 68.7 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.38 persons and the average family size is 2.82 people.

21.8 % of the population were younger than 20 years, 18.5% were 20-39 years old, 26.3% were 40-59 years old and 33.2% were at least 60 years old. The median age was 48 years. 47.8 % of the population were male and 52.2 % female.

The median income for a household was $ 41,098, while 14.8 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 89.01 % of the population spoke Spanish 6.97% and 4.02% had a different mother tongue.
