Hernando is a census -designated place (CDP ) in Citrus County in the U.S. state of Florida with 9,054 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

The CDP is crossed by U.S. Highway 41 and Florida State Road 200. It is located about 5 km north of Inverness and about 110 kilometers north of Tampa.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 9,054 inhabitants distributed to 5,425 households. The population density was 111.1 inh. / Km ². 94.8 % of the population were white, 2.2% African American, 0.4% Native American and 0.5 % Asian Americans. 0.6 % were members of other ethnic groups and 1.4% in different ethnic groups. 3.5% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 47.9 % of all households lived in 18.3 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 64.0 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.17 persons and the average family size is 2.60 people.

16.8% of the population were younger than 20 years, 14.9% were 20-39 years old, 27.0% were 40-59 years old and 41.3 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 54 years. 50.0 % of the population were male and 50.0 % female.

The average annual income was $ 33,792, while 24.2 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 97.57 % of the population and 2.43 % had a different mother tongue.
