Hernani is a Philippine municipality in the province of Eastern Samar.

History

Hernani was founded around 1850 by a settler from Guiuan with the name Miguel Candido. Hernani was a separate municipality by adopting a royal order on January 4, 1864.

On October 12, 1897 Hernani was hit by huge tidal waves. More than 300 people were killed, public buildings and homes were destroyed, including the newly built stone church. In the wake of this disaster, the survivors moved the capital to a safe location about a mile inland, on the site of the present municipal seat.

Immediately after the Philippine-American War Hernani lost its independence as a municipality and was as barrio ( district ) Lanang affiliated (today Llorente ). 1912 Hernani was again by adopting a government decree issued by the U.S. Governor General of the Philippines Leonard Wood independent municipality.
