Herschel Evans

Herschel Evans ( born March 9, 1909 in Denton (Texas ); † February 9, 1939 in New York City ) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist of the swing. He became famous for his playing in the Count Basie Orchestra 1936 until 1939. He died at the age of 29 from heart disease.

Life and work

Herschel Evans was born in Texas, spent his childhood but mainly in the area of Kansas City, where his cousin worked, the trombonist and guitarist Eddie Durham. This persuaded him to switch from alto to tenor saxophone. Evans earned his first fame in the jam sessions in the jazz District between the twelfth and eighteenth road from Kansas City. In the 1920s he returned temporarily to Texas and played 1928/29, the Troy Floyd Orchestra in San Antonio. In this band he remained until 1932 1934 he played with Coleman Hawkins.; for a time he performed with Lionel Hampton and Buck Clayton in Los Angeles.

The mid-1930s he returned to Kansas City; from 1936 until his death he played in the Count Basie Orchestra. In these years, Herschel Evans ' fame reached its peak: he delivered himself musical duels with his band and tenor colleague Lester Young, who became jazz classics. One O'Clock Jump shows the contrasting styles of Evans and Young. His impulsive, influenced by Coleman Hawkins playing style was in contrast to the more serene game of Lester Young. After the formation of the typical Hawkins - style with short and simple phrases that were blown with great force and vehemence, Herschel Evans got great importance for subsequent tenor players like Don Byas, Buddy Tate (who replaced him with Basie ), Illinois Jacquet and Arnett Cobb.

Herschel Evans arranged for Count Basie Texas Shuffle and Doggin ' Around ( 1938) and as a clarinetist in Jumpin' at the Woodside to hear (1938). Some of his best solos are found in Basie's The Glory Of Love, One O 'Clock Jump, John 's Idea and Smarty (1937 ) Gerorgianna, Send For You Yesterday, Swinging The Blues, Doggin ' Around, Texas Shuffle and Blue And Sentimental (1938 ). In addition, Lionel Hampton Shoe Shiner 's Drag and Muskret Ramble and Harry James' One A Clock Jump and Life Goes To A Party (1938). In addition, recordings are with Troy Floyd (1929 ), Mildred Bailey and Teddy Wilson.
