Hertsa

Herza (Ukrainian Герца; Russian Герца / Gerza, Romanian Herta; Polish Herca ) is a Rajonshauptstadt in the Ukrainian Chernivtsi Oblast. It is located south of the Pruths, about 28 km south-east of Chernivtsi near the border with Romania.

The city was first mentioned in writing in 1437 and belonged historically to the Principality of Moldavia. Through trade relations, the town became a market town ( municipal law since 1672). 1775-1777 the city was occupied by Austria, but then came back to the Ottoman Empire and was administratively responsible to the District Dorohoi. The emergence of Romania in 1859, the city was a part of that State, and in 1864 the city status was renewed.

In 1908 Herza was the city in which, in percentage terms, had the largest Jewish population in Romania. By 1938 Jews of 2935 inhabitants, this was 66.2 percent.

After the end of the First World War, the city remained in Romania and then in the wake of annexation of Bessarabia on August 2, 1940, a part of the Soviet Union. However, between 1941 and 1945, the city belonged to Romania in the meantime. Since 1991, a part of Ukraine. Until 1962 the city was the center of Rajons Herza, and has been the foundation of Rajons 1991.

The high proportion of the Romanian population (94 % of urban population ) is the basis, along with the city demands on Romania Herza the area for themselves.
