Herut

Herut (also called Herut ) (Hebrew: חרות = freedom, actually תנועת החרות - Tnu'at haCherut = Freedom Movement ) was the party organization of the Revisionist Zionism in Israel. This conservative- nationalist movement was the strongest opposition party to the ruling Israeli Labor Party.

Herut was founded in 1948 by Menachem Begin as a political successor to the underground organization Irgun, which was responsible for the attack on the King David Hotel in Jerusalem in 1946. The founding of the party was a challenge for the party haTzohar, which had been built by Begin's predecessor Ze'ev Jabotinsky.

From the outset, the party has been criticized, especially in a letter to the editor was published on 4 December 1948 in the New York Times. On the occasion of Begin's visit to New York City compared to about 20 Jewish intellectuals including Albert Einstein and Hannah Arendt, revisionist Zionism with " Nazi and Fascist parties."

In the first Knesset, the Herut was just one of the medium sized parties with 14 seats. The party had a reputation outside of the moderate Israeli mainstream to stand, and David Ben Gurion said in a famous quote that he would form a coalition with any party other than the Herut and the Communist Maki. Ben Gurion also avoided to call Begin by his name, but referred instead to " the ( Knesset ) member who is sitting next to Dr. Bader ".

The party grew in the wake slightly, primarily from a denigration of the Sephardic Israelis against the Labor Party out. In the years 1951 and 1952, the Herut adopted a negative attitude towards the Luxembourg Agreement with Germany and gained in popularity due to the widespread rejection of the reparations agreement. In 1965 the party was indeed associated with the Liberal Party of Israel to Gahal block, but she kept even their own structures in and dominated the new alliance. In the wake of the Six Day War and the growth of nationalist tendencies in the year 1967, the Gahal block brought (and thus the Herut ) already 22 seats in a grand coalition, Joseph Begin and sapphire were the liberals Minister without Portfolio.

Even after the elections in 1969, the Herut remained another term on the government, but resigned in 1970 because of the Rogers plan from the government. In 1973 there was a further union, and Gahal formed with other conservative parties, the Likud, but again the Herut remained the dominant force. In 1977 she won as part of the Likud coalition choice and thus stepped out of the role of the opposition party. Begin and his successor as party leader of the Likud Party, as Yitzhak Shamir, who came from the Herut. In 1988, the parties to the Likud alliance united formally and Herut ceased to exist independently. After the party had lost its independence, it was re- founded in 1998 by nationalist Likud deviants. The new Herut ( Herut haChadasch ) (see Herut, the national movement ) was led by Benny Begin and later by Michael Kleiner. After two unsuccessful Knesset elections in 2003 and 2006, however, the two went back to the Knesset Election 2009 Likud and Herut no longer went to.
