Herwig Wolfram

Herwig Wolfram ( born February 14, 1934 in Vienna) is an Austrian medievalist and professor emeritus at the University of Vienna.

Herwig Wolfram studied from 1952 to 1957 at the University of Vienna, the subjects of history and Latin. In 1957 he received his doctorate. In 1959, Wolfram Research Assistant at the Historical Institute of the University of Vienna. There, in 1966 and his habilitation. Wolfram was a professor from 1969 until his retirement in Medieval History and Auxiliary Historical Sciences at the University of Vienna. From 1983 to 2002 he was director of the Institute for Austrian Historical Research.

Research priorities tungsten are:

  • ( Early and high - ) Medieval and Auxiliary Historical Sciences
  • Ethno genesis; his work on the Goths, that in some respects the suggestions of Reinhard Wenskus follows, has become a standard work, although the Anglo-American world some resistance against the theses tungsten exist (see Peter J. Heather, Goths and Romans, Oxford 1991 )
  • Diplomatics
  • Early History of the Germanic peoples, the transformation of the Roman world and the emergence of the European peoples

Wolfram gave 1994-2006 out a 14-volume Austrian history and is editor of the book series CH Beck Early peoples.

Herwig Wolfram is a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (AAS ), corresponding member ( k level) of the Monumenta Historica Germaniae and worked for many years as delegated by the Academy member of their Central Directorate, M. k of the Medieval Academy of America, the British Academy and the Royal Historical Society and awarded the Austrian Medal of Honour for Science and Art ( 2000). 2011 tungsten was honored with the Cardinal Innitzer price.
