Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics

The NRC Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics (NRC - HIA) is the leading Canadian Research Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics. The institute was named after a Canadian physicist, chemist and Nobel laureate Gerhard Herzberg and established in 1975. The Institute is part of the National Research Council of Canada and had its headquarters first in Ottawa, Ontario. In 1995, the headquarters of the Institute to Victoria, British Columbia was moved to the grounds of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory.

The Institute operates the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory near Penticton, British Columbia, as well as Canadian participation in the Canada -France - Hawaii Telescope, that Canadian Astronomy Data Centre. Furthermore, the Institute on the Gemini Observatory, involved in the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array. In addition, the Institute develops and builds instruments for astrophysics and telescopes.

Members of the NRC- HIA are involved in the Pan - Andromeda Archaeological Survey Project, with the Canada -France - Hawaii Telescope.
