Herzburg

The Herzburg ( Harzburg ) was located near the district town of old churches (Westerwald ) on the elongated mountain ridge between Gieleroth, Aries Stone, Ingelbach and Borod. Archaeological monuments and place names give clues to the earlier settlement. This hilltop is circled by the Wied and is strategically located between the old " Cologne - Frankfurt - road " (now Federal Street 8) and the old Cologne - Leipzig Street ( now the Federal Road 414). Both roads are identical from Cologne to old churches. From old churches they branch. The Cologne - Leipzig road is called from Cologne to Greifenstein / Herborn an der Lahn also Cölnische High army and Geleitstraße.

It The mineral wealth beneath the Herzberg and proximity to the two "high streets " ( = watersheds roads) suggest that the region was inhabited in prehistoric times. Only in 1935 a prehistoric mound grave was eliminated from the " labor service ". The section of wall, which should protect the mountain ridge against enemies is still clearly visible.

In old maps from 1820 to the ridge " Harzburg " is called. But in the new cadastral maps is " Herzberg ", " Heart Castle " and " Erzburg " the speech. On the slopes arise from several sources, so that was not necessary to geschachtet too low on the hilltop to create wells.

In the Middle Ages seems to have been on the Herzberg a castle to secure the two highways. As the year 1300 in the nearby Old Churches - already an important road junction - built a castle and this place was secured from the year 1314 as a city, lost the " Herzburg " their meaning. From the Heart Castle, an upstream Burgmannenhof only remained on the parcel " In the middle of the heart castle ". This probably disappeared with the demise of the county of Sayn- old churches.

In the surrounding villages, a tale of the heart castle is still being told.
